Talking Ben
Talking Ben is an interactive character game centered on Ben, a retired chemistry professor who prefers sitting quietly, reading his newspaper, eating, and drinking. There is no traditional story campaign or sequence of levels. Instead, the player interacts directly with Ben and tries different actions to see how he responds. He initially ignores most attempts to get his attention, so the first task is usually to make him put away his newspaper and start reacting to the player.
Getting Ben to React
Once Ben becomes responsive, the player can touch different parts of his body, tickle him, give him food or drinks, and trigger several short animations. Speaking into the microphone makes Ben repeat what he hears in his own voice. His reactions range from laughter and annoyance to burping and other simple responses, making experimentation with the available buttons the main part of the game.
Phone Calls and Everyday Interactions
The phone is one of the main interactive features. Calling Ben starts a conversation in which he responds with short sounds and reactions while the player speaks. Other available actions include:
· touching or poking Ben;
· tickling his stomach;
· giving him food and drinks;
· making him burp;
· talking so he repeats your words;
· calling him on the phone;
· interacting with his newspaper and graduation picture;
· entering the chemistry laboratory.
These activities are independent, so there is no required order or final objective that needs to be completed.
The chemistry laboratory adds another type of interaction. Inside it, players can select two test tubes and combine them to create different reactions. Each mixture produces its own visual result, encouraging players to try different combinations and see what happens. Ben becomes much more enthusiastic in the laboratory, which contrasts with his bored behavior while sitting with the newspaper.
Experimenting With Ben
Talking Ben does not use combat, character upgrades, missions, or a fixed ending. The game is built around short interactions that can be repeated whenever the player wants. Players can spend time talking with Ben, testing his reactions, making phone calls, or experimenting with chemicals in the laboratory. The main appeal comes from discovering how Ben responds to different actions and creating amusing situations through direct interaction with the character.
