Insomnia
Insomnia is a psychological horror visual novel inspired by the Jeff the Killer creepypasta. The player controls a gender-neutral high school student whose normal routine changes after becoming involved with the wrong group of people. Rumors, school conflicts, and increasingly disturbing events eventually lead to an encounter with a man marked by a Glasgow smile. The game reinterprets the familiar Jeff the Killer story through an original protagonist and additional characters rather than simply repeating the original creepypasta.
Trouble Begins at School
Much of the early story follows the protagonist’s interactions with other students and the consequences of becoming connected to the wrong crowd. Conversations can create conflicts that later affect what happens outside school. Jeff becomes more important as the situation escalates, and the player gradually moves from ordinary social problems into direct danger. The story is presented through character portraits, backgrounds, dialogue, and illustrated horror scenes.
Choices Change What Happens Next
Insomnia follows a visual novel structure, so there are no traditional action levels or free-roaming areas. The player mainly reads dialogue and selects responses when choices appear. During a playthrough, players can:
· follow conversations with classmates;
· decide how to react during conflicts;
· choose whether to reveal information to Jeff;
· make decisions during dangerous encounters;
· follow different branches of the story;
· reach different outcomes;
· replay scenes to test alternative choices.
Some decisions can change how later confrontations unfold, including whether the protagonist survives particular situations.
The game does not contain combat controls, inventories, character statistics, or equipment upgrades. Progress comes entirely from moving through the narrative and making decisions. Violence becomes more prominent as the story moves closer to Jeff, with blood, gore, character deaths, flashing imagery, and strong language appearing during certain scenes. Because several branches are available, choosing a different response can reveal material that was not shown during the previous attempt.
Surviving the Encounter With Jeff
The main challenge is understanding how each choice may affect the protagonist’s situation. What begins as a high school story gradually becomes a survival horror scenario where trusting the wrong person or responding badly can lead to a different ending. Insomnia is mainly about dialogue, branching decisions, school conflicts, psychological horror, and the player’s eventual confrontation with Jeff the Killer.
