The Farmer Was Replaced

The Farmer Was Replaced is a programming and automation game where the player controls a farming drone instead of performing every task manually. The farm begins with simple actions such as harvesting a single tile, but progression gradually introduces larger fields, new crops, resources, and more complicated problems. Rather than directly steering the drone all the time, the player writes instructions in a Python-like language and then watches the program execute them across the farm.

Teaching the Drone to Farm

Early tasks introduce basic commands one concept at a time. A short program might simply tell the drone to harvest, while later scripts can check whether a plant is ready, move between tiles, prepare soil, plant crops, or repeat the same process indefinitely. Loops, conditions, functions, variables, and other programming concepts become practical tools for reducing repetitive work. The challenge comes from figuring out how to combine these commands into reliable routines rather than following one fixed solution.

Turning Simple Scripts Into Automation

Resources collected from the farm are used to unlock additional technology and expand what the drone can do. As more mechanics become available, players can write programs that handle increasingly complicated jobs. Typical tasks include:

·         harvesting crops when they are ready;

·         moving across the entire field;

·         planting different types of crops;

·         preparing soil and watering plants;

·         checking conditions before performing an action;

·         managing several resources automatically;

·         improving scripts so fewer unnecessary actions are performed.

The goal gradually changes from making individual commands work to building systems that can operate with very little manual input.

There are no traditional numbered stages that end after solving one programming puzzle. Progress is continuous, with new technologies opening additional possibilities for the same farm. Later systems can involve larger fields, more advanced crops, specialized resource production, maze-related challenges, and multiple drones working together. This makes optimization increasingly important because a script that works on a small field may become inefficient when the same logic has to manage a much larger operation.

Building a Farm That Runs Itself

The long-term objective is to automate as much of the farming process as possible. Players repeatedly write code, run it, observe what the drone does, identify mistakes or wasted actions, and improve the program. There is no combat or traditional character progression. Advancement comes from collecting resources, unlocking new tools, and creating increasingly efficient algorithms until the farm can handle complex tasks largely on its own.
